AIMA Portugal – Support Overview
AIMA was established in 2023 to manage immigration, asylum, and migrant integration. It replaced SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) for civil and administrative functions related to foreigners.
1. Immigration & Residence Support
Services Provided:
- Applications for residence permits
- Visa extensions and renewals
- Family reunification requests
- Job Seeker and D7 Visa processing
- Legal regularization of undocumented migrants
- Document verification and updates
Support Provided Through:

- Scheduled appointments (Agendamentos)
2. Integration Support
Programs & Help For Migrants:
- Language classes (Portuguese for All – “Português para Todos”)
- Cultural orientation sessions
- Employment guidance and training
- School and education system support
- Health system access help
3. Asylum & Refugee Services
AIMA handles:
- Asylum applications and refugee registration
- Temporary documentation issuance
- Shelter support in collaboration with NGOs
- Humanitarian protection programs
4. Legal & Social Support
- Legal advice for migrants and asylum seekers
- Support for victims of trafficking or vulnerable groups
- Mediation services between migrants and institutions
- Help with document translation and notarization (in some cases)
